In class today, we will practice the article “NO FAIR!” (about dogs); close-read and answer m/c questions. *I suggest you also practice at home -- simply choose articles that sound appealing to you.
Prompt: Read the following two poems very carefully, noting that the second includes an allusion to the first. Then write a well-organized essay in which you discuss their similarities and differences. In your essay, be sure to consider both theme and style.
Points on Keats
--sonnet—mixes Italian and Elizabethan
--diction shows reverence for star
--first half shows Romantic reverence and use of nature
--second part moves to the emotions he feels—in love
Dramatic at end—will die without her love
Points on Frost
--speaker is more “familiar” with the star—says star cannot withhold its wisdom and must speak to us
--varies the rhyme pattern—keeps us paying attention, as we must pay attention to the star
--some humor—the star’s reply of “I burn.”
--uses allusion to connect star to Keats’s
--this star challenges/demands of us in a way that Keats’s does not
Keats’s poem connects a bit more with the emotions (heart) while Frost’s connects more with thought (mind).
