Advisory

Course Description

The ESAT High School advisory program provides support for the school’s main mission – cultivating ethical learners who understand their impact and

·      Providing every child with a mentor and adult advocate;

The Advisor, of course is the mentor and advocate. This will be more fruitful with the Advisor being expected to document phone calls on the Advisor Family Communication log every 4-6 weeks in addition to hosting parent conferences each semester.

·      Developing habits of heart and mind that will support the socio-emotional development of the student;

Goal Setting, reflections, and weekly journaling will be used. Advisory used to have ringed notebooks, but now we want to do a Google Doc journal and give Advisors one of two options: Dialogue Journaling would be more of an open communication with the Advisor and they would be expected to read an entry every 2-3 weeks and respond. Personal Reflections would be written by the student and only glanced over for completion credit every 2-3 weeks but not read or responded to. The concern: The concern was raised  about student and teacher communications and what might happen if the student writes something that discloses danger or abuse. Is there a legal issue with the time frame in which something is written and how long it takes the teacher to read and report it?

·      Challenging every student to examine and enhance his/her role in the school, local, and global community.

The Facing History curriculum will used be used to expose students to other people’s situations and perspectives and of course have them reflect on their own decisions and plan to make decisions in the future to be an active contributor to the community. We will plan to host two Facing History Modules for each grade level. If you would like more details, let me know.
